BACTERIOLOGY & HOSPITAL HYGIENE

The main research interests of the Bacteriology Research Group are: (1) studying epidemiology of bacterial infections and resistance development, (2) establishing and evaluating new diagnostic approaches based mainly on mass spectrometry and molecular tests like PCR and sequencing for pathogen identification and resistance determination, (3) elucidating bacterial and host risk factors that are associated with severe disease, focusing mainly on the interaction of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) virulence factors with host cells and the complement system as an important part of innate immunity, (4) development of new antimicrobial agents (such as the endogenous antiseptic N-chlorotaurine and other active halogen compounds) for therapy of infections of different body regions, (5) evaluating infection control precautions in respect to their impact on transmission and disease prevention and studying the role of inanimate environment and (6) developing tools for outbreak management.
