BACTERIOLOGY & HOSPITAL HYGIENE

The main research interests of the Bacteriology Research Group are: (1) elucidating bacterial and host risk factors that are associated with severe disease, focusing mainly on the complement system as an important part of innate immunity, (2) development of new antimicrobial agents such as the endogenous antiseptic N-chlorotaurine and other active halogen compounds for therapy of infections, (3) evaluating infection control precautions in respect to their impact on transmission and disease prevention and studying the role of inanimate environment, (4) monitoring the emergence of highly resistant/pahtogenic bacterial strains and species as well as developing novel tools for the rapid detection and confirmation of these pathogens.
