PhD positions (2) in Molecular Neuroscience

We are looking for highly motivated PhD candidates with strong interest in functional genomics, stem cell biology or molecular neuroscience to join two international collaborative projects funded by the Austrian Research Fund (FWF).

The projects are focused on the function of the chromatin organizer “special AT-rich sequence binding protein 2” (SATB2) in cortical neurons. Our previous work has established a role for SATB2 in human intelligence. The projects now aim to elucidate how alterations in nuclear geometry, chromatin-nuclear envelope interactions and 3D genome structure are linked to activity-driven transcriptional response in neurons. The two projects will make use of state-of-the art functional genomics assays and two experimental model systems – SATB2-deficient mouse primary cortical neurons on project 1 and brain organoids derived from human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, carrying mutations in the SATB2 locus in project 2. The projects aim to identify similarities and differences in SATB2 molecular and cellular functions between the two species.

Applicants are expected to hold a Master’s degree in a relevant scientific field (for example molecular medicine, molecular biology, biotechnology, cell biology, genetics or neurobiology). Previous exposure to bioinformatics analyses is of advantage.

Our students benefit from the specifically designed and multi-facetted training in life sciences offered by the Ph.D. program of Medical University Innsbruck. This training regime is accompanied by strict project quality management, monitoring by a thesis steering committee and personal scientific supervision. The successful candidates will also be offered to acquire additional skills and techniques at collaborating laboratories of international renown.

The project is fully funded, salary is EUR 2162,- gross income per month (including health insurance).

To apply for the position, please provide a detailed CV, a motivation letter (maximum one page), a master degree certificate (with grades), and two letters of recommendation. All requested information should be emailed as a single .pdf file to Prof. Georg Dechant, PhD (Georg.Dechant@i-med.ac.at). Only complete applications will be considered.

Selection occurs based on information submitted in the application. Pre-selected applicants will be notified and personal on-site/Skype interviews will be arranged.

Speculative application:

Applicants and students with an intrest in the institute are always welcome and can forward their application. Please provide a detailed CV, a motivation letter (maximum one page), a degree certificate (with grades), and two letters of recommendation. All requested information should be emailed as a single .pdf file to Prof. Georg Dechant, PhD (Georg.Dechant@i-med.ac.at).
