The Presidential Team of the Medical University of Innsbruck Takes a Stand Against Antisemitism
The Medical University of Innsbruck unequivocally stands against antisemitism. In a joint initiative, the university’s presidential team has placed a small wooden plaque inscribed with the words “Never Again”—provided by the international organization March of the Living—next to the memorial commemorating those who were displaced and murdered on the grounds of the university hospitals.
With this act, the presidential team of the Medical University of Innsbruck once again makes a visible and deliberate statement against all forms of antisemitism and in favor of an open, tolerant, and democratic society.
“In light of current global developments marked by a disturbing rise in antisemitic sentiments, it is particularly important for us as the university’s leadership to take a clear stance,” stated President Wolfgang Fleischhacker. “By placing this plaque, we are making an unequivocal statement: The Medical University of Innsbruck firmly opposes hatred, exclusion, and violence. ‘NEVER AGAIN’ is not only a reminder of the past—it is a call to action for the present.”
The memorial itself was erected in 2008 and serves as a tribute to the professors, physicians, and students of the Medical Faculty of Innsbruck who were excluded and expelled in March 1938 under the Nazi regime. It stands as part of the university’s long-standing commitment to confronting and reflecting upon its own history.
