Eco- & Nutritional Biochemistry & Nutrigenomics

Group leader: Ao. Univ. Prof. Mag. Dr. Florian Überall, Retired

We are interested in cellular communication systems. By applying system biological approaches we study the properties and functions of natural products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phytochemicals on human cell systems.

Amongst other project, these are the most recent major accomplishments:

2013-2016 KITCHEN APPLIANCES (FFG-HQ-Project): Development of new kitchen appliances for healthier cooking.

2012-2014 VocOnCell (FFG-bridge project): Cellular and molecular risk assessment of volatile organic compounds from wood-based materials on human cell models using a new type of emission and exposure chamber.

2012-2013 PHYTORAF I&II (Intelligent technologies bmvit): Analysis of bioactive extracts – cascading use of waste from plant harvest and processing.

Mode of action analysis of plant derived allelochemicals on microbes and human cell systems, a proof of principle study.

2008-2011 PHYTEST (FFG-bridge project): Establishment of in-vitro models for a risk-benefit assessment of phytochemicals.

Follow up: Together with a commercial partner in Switzerland we investigate the fundamental regulation of allelochemicals in plants. Additionally, we aim to examine their activities on microbes and human cell models.

Main research focus:

  • Deeper insights into inter- and intracellular communication systems
  • Signal transduction of natural & volatile organic compounds
  • Identification of gene expression signatures
  • Genome-wide pathway and network analysis
  • Functional characterisation of the interactome
  • Profound understanding of the cellular redox-regulated pathways
  • Identification on new key players in PKC signaling
  • NUTRIGENOMICS
  • VOLATILOMICS

 Major achievements

  • Activity monitoring of natural products, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and phytochemicals on cell models in vitro
  • Identification and quantification of bioactive organic compounds  from plants, microbes and human cell systems
  • Identification of novel endogenous protein kinase C (PKC) epsilon substrates
  • Scientific cooperations: Characterization of abiotic stress factors of cyanobacteria – isolation of active principles (Associate Prof. Priv-Doz. Dr. M. Ganzera, Institute for Pharmacy and Pharmacognosy, LFU, FWF-project)
