MUI-Funding for PhD Research Training Groups

The Medical University of Innsbruck (MUI) opens an internal call for innovative PhD Research Training Groups fitting in with the thematic frame of the programs of the Innsbruck PhD School for Biomedical Sciences

Objective: to ensure the sustainable establishment of excellent doctoral programs (by international standards) at the MUI.

Only proposals fitting in with the thematic orientation of the following programs can be submitted:

  • Neurosciences
  • Molecular and Cellular Biology of Diseases
  • Infection, Immunity & Transplantation
  • Image-Guided Diagnosis and Therapy
  • Musculoskeletal Sciences

All members of the applying consortium must have proven experience in supervising PhD projects.
All members of the applying consortium must have excellent research qualifications by international standards.

Funding volume: personal costs for 5 to 6 PhD students for 4 years, plus € 5.000/PhD student/year for consumables.

Deadline: This call will be open from 03.05.2022 until 02.07.2022

Application: projects must be submitted by the coordinator of the intended PhD Research Training Group online via GAR (

An application must include:

  • Application form (GAR)
  • Proposal including the following sections: research framework, consortium, training program, added value, planned dissertation topics and references cited. Please use the application template provided here.
  • Detailed CV of all consortium members (max. 3 pages, following the FWF guidelines for curricula vitae).
  • Separate list of officially supervised PhD students in the last 5 years for all members of the applying consortium.
  • An abstract of maximum one page. The abstract must contain the following sections: research context, hypotheses/research questions, approach/methods, consortium and added value. The abstract is part of the application template.

Selection procedure:
Projects will be selected by a MUI internal committee according to the following criteria: the qualifications of the consortium and the suitability of the proposed PhD Research Training Group for the Innsbruck PhD School for Biomedical Sciences, as well as its scientific excellence. Doctoral colleges that fall within the MUI strategic research focus or that represent a continuation of FWF funded doctoral programs (i.e. DKs or doc.funds) will be given priority. Furthermore, doc.funds applications that were positively evaluated by the FWF but did not receive funding will also be given priority. Please note that the MUI can only fund those applications in a reduced format (max. 6 PhD positions with their respective training costs). Applications that are incomplete with regard to the requirements will not be assessed by the committee.
