Who is permitted to ship dangerous goods?

At the Medical University, dangerous goods may only by shipped by trained personnel. The Competence Centre for Clinical Trials (KKS) offers training courses on this topic twice a year.

The dangerous goods training course qualifies participants exclusively to ship the following dangerous goods classifications:

  • UN3373 Biological substance, category B
  • UN1845 Dry ice
  • UN3481 Lithium ion batteries
  • UN3245 Genetically modified organisms

Dry ice

Dry ice (solid CO2) can be obtained from the BdR - Safety and Health department. To do so, please send an email to gefahrgut@i-med.ac.at by 1:00 p.m. on the day before collection with the following information:

  • Required quantity in kg
  • Day, date and time of collection

Opening hours
Monday - Thursday: 7:30-9:00; 9:15 - 11:30 and 12:30 - 15:30
Friday: 7:30-9:00; 9:15 - 11:30

Packaging

IATA-compliant packaging for shipping biological samples (UN3373) on dry ice or at room temperature can be obtained from the BdR - Safety and Health department. The following packaging options are available:

  • S: Dry ice capacity 4 kg and biohazard pressure bag S
  • M: Dry ice capacity 6 kg (currently unavailable)
  • L: Dry ice capacity 10 kg and biohazard pressure bag L
  • Cardboard box for shipments at room temperature and the matching biohazard pressure bag

Drop-off locations

DHL
For shipments sent via DHL, a daily fixed collection time between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. has been set up on the 1st floor, room 3-G1-641, low-rise building between FKK and Internal Medicine (Follow signs: Probenversand). Due to the fixed collection time, it is NOT necessary to book a collection.
