Arriving in Tyrol

Welcome Service Tirol
The Welcome Service Tirol supports new employees in quickly settling in Tyrol and our university. The initiative offers valuable assistance with finding accommodation, dealing with administrative matters, language courses, and many other organizational matters.
The service is primarily aimed at people who are new to Tyrol and supports them in their transition into the region‘s professional and social life.

Austrian Business Agency GmbH
The Austrian Business Agency (ABA) is a subsidiary of the Federal Ministry of Labor and Economic Affairs. The WORK in AUSTRIA department advises and supports qualified professionals and their families on living and working in Austria.

Visa and Residence Permit
Persons from countries outside the EU and EEA (except Switzerland) require a special visa or residence permit to enter and stay in Austria. The type of visa or residence permit required depends on how long they are staying and why they are coming to Austria.
Stays of up to 6 months – a Visa is issued for this.
• Length of stay up to 90 days: Visum C – Erwerb (obtaining a C visa)
• Length of stay 91 days to 6 months: Visum D –Erwerb (obtaining a D visa)

Stays longer than 6 months – an Aufenthaltstitel (a residence permit) is required.
The type of residence permit required depends on how long you intend to stay and the reason for your stay – for example, for employment, as a researcher, or for a Red-White-Red Card. The visa and residence permit must be submitted to the Human Resources department in a timely manner. Please note that a processing time of two weeks should be observed. When hiring individuals from third countries, all legal requirements for employment must be met.

Proof of infection protection
If you will be working in the clinical setting, Tirol Kliniken requires proof of infection protection for measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella.

Tax Benefits for Incoming Scientists and Researchers
Highly qualified scientists and researchers from abroad can apply for tax relief, if certain requirements are met. This is intended to avoid additional tax burdens. There is also the option of receiving a tax allowance for relocation (influx tax allowance).

Registration of residence and registration certificate
Please note: If your new residence is in Tyrol, you must report this to the relevant municipal authority within three working days. In Innsbruck, the Innsbruck City Council (Stadtmagistrat) at the Town Hall (Rathaus) is responsible for this; in all other Tyrolean municipalities, the respective municipal office (Gemeindeamt) is responsible.
EU citizens must apply for a registration certificate concerning their stay in Austria within four months after entering Austria.

Bank account
Upon presentation of your employee card, some banks offer discounted rates for your salary account. Details can be found on the website of the works council: under the heading of “Firmenrabatte” (company discounts).

Do you have any questions about childcare or balancing work and family? Then it is worth taking a look at the website of the Work-Family Compatibility Department that is part of the Coordination Office for Equality, Women’s Advancement and Diversity.
There you will find a wealth of helpful information, e.g. contact points and information for working parents, company kindergarten, holiday care or childcare in case of illness.

Social Security 

ASVG-Insurance
When you are employed at the Medical University of Innsbruck, you are automatically insured under the ASVG (General Social Insurance Act), and your close relatives can usually also be insured. This compulsory insurance is comprehensive (= health, accident, and pension insurance).

E-Card
You will receive a personal e-card from your health insurance company to identify yourself to doctors and hospitals. The e-card must include a photo and is non- transferable. You submit the photo in person to an official registration office, and the e-card will then be sent to you by mail.

EU Pension
All insurance periods acquired in an EU member state are fully recognized in Austria. If you move to Austria, the Pension Insurance Institution (PVA) is responsible for you. For questions about your entire pension, please contact the PVA.

The pension fund commitment of the Medical University of Innsbruck
In addition to the statutory pension provision, you will also receive an additional pension (enshrined in the collective agreement) from the Medical University of Innsbruck (pension fund commitment).
