W. Wolfgang Fleischhacker

Wolfgang Fleischhacker, MD, is the President of the Medical University of Innsbruck in Austria, in which he previously served as Professor and Managing Director in the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics. He is a certified psychiatrist and behavioral psychotherapist. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Innsbruck, Dr. Fleischhacker trained at the Departments of Psychiatry and Neurology of the Medical Faculty there. In 1987 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent 18 months at Hillside Hospital in New York.

In addition to his teaching duties in Innsbruck, Wolfgang Fleischhacker also served as the Humes Visiting Professor at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York and as a Distinghished Visiting Professor at the Keio University Medical School Tokyo. 2021 he was appointed as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry (Courtesy) at the Weill Cornell Medical College in New York. He is the psychiatry course co-director for the Salzburg Seminars of the Open Medical Institute. From 2002 to 2005 he was President of the Austrian Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (ÖGPP) and from 2006 to 2010 Vice President of the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP). Since 1997 he has been chairman of the European Group for Research in Schizophrenia (EGRIS) and in 2006 he was accepted as a Foreign Corresponding Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, only the second Austrian to achieve this honor.
Research Interests: Dr. Fleischhacker’s main research interests relate to schizophrenia and psychopharmacology. They have led to participation in World Health Organization and World Psychiatric Association programs focusing on schizophrenia. He was also a member of the scientific committee of the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety and has served as a consultant for the European Medicines Agency. He is (co-)author of well over 400 scientific papers, his current Hirsch-index amounts to 70.

Dr. Fleischhacker is a member of the editorial boards of several peer reviewed journals and a member of the following scientific societies:

Chairman of the European Group for Research in Schizophrenia,
Fellow of the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology,
Fellow emeritus of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology,
Fellow of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology.
He is also a member of the Austrian Society of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (senior past president) and the Austrian Schizophrenia Society (honorary past president).
