The StudentCard
The student ID card serves a number of practical purposes, both in everyday student life and beyond.
First and foremost, it provides official proof of student status and can therefore be used for identification purposes.
The physical StudenCard (chip card)
The physical StudentCard must be presented as proof of identity when
- attending classes and
- taking examinations.
It also provides access to the building and designated areas, such as study and reading rooms, at the Medical University of Innsbruck on weekends (if the building is open.
Use of Lockers
Lockers on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors of Fritz-Pregl-Straße 3 may only be used with a physical StudentCard.
Lockers may be used for one day only and must be emptied on the same day. Please note that it is your responsibility to ensure that your locker is cleared before the end of the day.
If you forget to empty your locker, please report to the Skills Lab on the 3rd floor during the following hours:
Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays): 09:00–10:00
Our staff can unlock your locker for a fee of €20.-. The fee must be paid on site by debit card.
Renewal of the Student ID Card
The student ID card can be renewed at the validation machines each semester after payment of the semester fee.

The validation machines can be found at the following locations:
Fritz-Pregl-Straße 3, A-6020 Innsbruck
- 1st floor, towards the south (next to the vending machine)
- 4th floor, on the left after entering, during office hours
or
Innrain 80/82, A-6020 Innsbruck
- 1st floor
The student ID card may also entitle you to various discounts. Many institutions, such as museums, cinemas and public transport providers, offer reduced prices upon presentation of a valid StudentCard. The StudentCard can also serve as proof of student status when dealing with public authorities or the student grant office.
What should I do if I need a replacement physical StudentCard?
When can I apply for a replacement StudentCard?
A replacement StudentCard can be requested if your card has been lost or stolen, if it has been damaged, or if your name has changed (e.g. following marriage).
How can I apply for a new StudentCard?
To have a new StudentCard issued, please visit the Student Services Department in person during office hours, and bring the following documents and/or supporting evidence:
- Completed application for a replacement card
- Proof of payment of the replacement fee (payment receipt)
Additional documentation, depending on the reason for replacement:
- Loss or theft: A loss report (Verlustanzeige) issued by the municipal lost property office or the police.
- Change of name: Official documentation confirming the change of civil status or name (e.g. marriage certificate or birth certificate).
- Damaged StudentCard: Please bring the damaged card with you to the Student Services Department.
The replacement fee of €15.- can either be paid on site by debit card or transferred to the following bank account before the new StudentCard is issued:

The digital StudentCard
Since the summer semester of 2026, students have also had the option of applying for a digital StudentCard. This option is available to anyone enrolled at at least one public Austrian university, university of applied sciences or university college of teacher education who has either a fully activated ID Austria or an eID notified under the eIDAS Regulation with a photograph registered in an Austrian register.
The „eAusweise“ app is required in order to use the digital StudentCard.
What can the digital StudentCard be used for?
- The digital StudentCard is generally recognised by external institutions and enables students to benefit from various discounts.
What can it not be used for?
- The digital StudentCard does not currently replace the physical StudentCard and therefore cannot be used as proof of identity when attending classes or taking examinations.
The physical StudentCard remains valid for the following services:
- Identification at classes and examinations
- Opening and locking lockers
- Access for tutors to authorised rooms
- Borrowing materials from the libraries
