Research in the Division of Medical Biochemistry is focused on signalling pathways regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis and differentiation in mammalian tissues with special reference to malignant cells. In addition, RNA-protein interactions are investigated with a focus on protein translation and ribosome function.

Two of these scientists are prinicple investigators of the newly established special research grant (SFB) on Cell Proliferation and Cell Death in Tumors. There are close collaborations with the University Clinics of Urology and of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

The Laboratory for Clinical Chemistry is engaged in the development and evaluation of new clinically useful markers in cooperation with several departments of the University Hospital and conducts assays for hospitals and physicians, focusing on rare, more sophisticated and novel parameters.
