Data transfer policy

All facility microscopes are integrated in the i-med domain. Users can log into the respective computer systems after validation with their q Number and password.

This procedure will also automatically mount the respective network drives. The network drives should be used to transfer data from the microscopes.

USB sticks are generally NOT ALLOWED, due to the risk of spreading computer viruses.

Users from clinical departments whose PCs (or Macs) are usually not within the i-med domain can manually mount their IT equipment following the guidelines below.

  • Manual mounting instructions: PC
  • Manual mounting instructions: Mac

On the iMIC it is very easy to produce huge amounts of data in relatively short time; the total capacity of the N/Temp drive is rather small (only 20 Gb!!!) , meaning that even a single session on the iMIC may exceed that data amount already (if you are doing high-speed imaging, etc…). The following solutions for temporary data transfer from the iMIC are suggested.

1)     Address your leading professor (“OE Leiter/in”) and tell him/her that you need more space for your image data on the group network drive (example:  Neurobiochemie auf “share2\adgroup” (P:) ); he or she has to contact the IT helpdesk (phone, email)  and negotiate your needs for storage space. THIS IS CLEARLY THE BEST AND EASIEST solution for you as a user. When you are done with that you can just use your department drive for data transfer instead of the N/Temp.

2)     OR  request an FTP account via the form “Projektbezogener Account” (see IT Website). This is also fine, but you need to know how to handle FTP software and have it also installed on your local PC, more complicated than 1) but doable.

It is possible that the IT department will provide more capacity on N/Temp in the future but this is not guaranteed!

For permanent storage of large amounts of data, which are easily generated on high end microscopes, our IT department offers a mass storage system, which can be used to archive

large amounts of data.
