University studies of human medicine at the Medical School at the University Innsbruck – MD and Medical Specialization in Hygiene and Medical Microbiology - medical mycology - hospital infection control - epidemiology and prevention of hospital infections - Aspergillus and innate immunity – antifungal susceptibility testing and antifungal drug resistance
Current Position
Head of the Division of Hygiene and Medical Microbiology at the Medical University of Innsbruck
Research Interests
My overall clinical and research focus is to improve the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of immunocompromised patients, specifically those with invasive fungal infections. My research area is divided between my laboratory focusing on the molecular pathogenesis of Aspergillus terreus and development of novel diagnostic assays, and numerous translational and clinical studies centered on several diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of invasive fungal infections. Our laboratory uses molecular genetic tools to understand fungal pathogenesis, we also perform in vitro and in vivo testing of antifungal compounds and use numerous different animal models specifically designed to mimic the immune system of a cancer patient or transplant recipient. Other important areas include preventive measures to reduce healthcare-associated infections.
