About the Institute of Virology

As an institute for virology at a medical faculty we strive to contribute to a better prevention and therapy of virus infections in man. With this endeavor the section focuses on two areas: Research on antiviral therapy and viral vaccines as well as on clinical virology including virological/serological diagnostics.

Focuses on antiviral therapy and viral vaccines research

  • Development of anti-cancer (oncolytic) viruses
  • Development of immunologically optimed antibodies as therapy against cancer and infection
  • Innovative vaccines against AIDS and cancer

Focuses on clinical virology

  • Epidemiology of Human Papilloma Viruses (HPV) in Austria
  • Herpes Viruses infections of the central nervous system
  • New viruses / pathogens targeting the respiratory tract
  • Development of viral resistance against anti-viral drugs
