Soon after establishing a clinical transplant program it became clear to me that in the long term such a program can not be successful without research. It was our intention to build up a research lab to deal with all relevant problems encountered in transplantation such as ischemia reperfusion injury, immunosuppression and tolerance induction. Right from the beginning basic researchers and clinicians have worked side by side on high-quality translational research in this lab.
